Mela Chiraghan begins in Lahore


LAHORE: Punjab Auqaf Minister Haji Ehsan-ud-din Qureshi has said the present government is paying special attention on the protection and renovation of shrines of Sufi saints.

Inaugurating Hazrat Shah Hussain’s annual Urs celebrations, also known as Mela Chiraghan, here on Saturday, he said that Mela Chiraghan was a traditional event of Punjab, especially Lahore, and the Auqaf Department had made special arrangements for visitors.

Ulema and Mashaikh should play an active role in setting up a society based on religious harmony, tolerance and social equality, he added.

He said Islam teaches peace, harmony and equality and by following in footsteps of Sufi saints, people should create an atmosphere of peace and harmony.
