Govt implementing strategy to provide clean, safe drinking water: Ehsanud Din
LAHORE: Minister Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Punjab Haji Ehsan-ud-Din Qureshi has said that the government is implementing a comprehensive strategy for providing clean and safe drinking water specially in rural areas and strengthening of environmental health measure through community based initiatives, practical strategy and capacity building activities at the local level. He said that Rs. 12 billion are being spent for ongoing and new developmental schemes, however, majority funds were being utilized in rural areas, whereas, Rs. 31 billion are being spent to provide civic amenities under district project.
He expressed these views at the ceremony for Award distribution to the best CBOs of district, division and province. At this occasion, Mr. Suhail Aamir, Secretary Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Department appreciated the performance of CBOs and asked to put more efforts.
Haji Ehsan-Ud-Din Qureshi said that government of the Punjab is putting more efforts to involve and empower the community organization. According to the policy of government, Rural Water supply schemes are operated and maintained by the communities on self-help and self-finance basis without any support of government of Punjab, he added. He said that the initiative was taken first time in the province by the Punjab government in April 2011 for the encouragement of CBOs. All of the participated CBOs presented their record and evidences to the expert panelists who evaluated the performance on multiple indicators and finalized the results. Then, the top three CBOs were awarded shields and certificates, it concluded.
