Sonoco tray increasing shelf life of fresh-cut produce

US-based Sonoco has produced a tray which is part of system that is claimed to increase shelf life for fresh-cut produce.

The firm paired up with Paper Pak Industries which is a manufacturer of absorbent mediums for the food industry and Bunzl Distribution, a packaging and supplies distribution company.

The system, known as the UltraFreshSystem, includes a Sonoco tray and an UltraZapXtendaPak food safety pad from Paper Pak.

The product is available in the USA in white and black with future plans of increasing the range.

Rodger Fuller, the vice president of global rigid plastics at Sonoco, said: “The UltraFreshSystem is a cost-effective package that delivers superior merchandising appeal and extended shelf life.

“Produce processors can also count on less shrink, better margins and reduced packaging costs”.

The product has an insert to channel liquid away from the tray while the pad absorbs excess moisture inside the package and emits a steady stream of carbon dioxide, reducing the growth of microorganisms such as yeast and mould.

The developers say that the pad and the insert keep the appearance of the fresh-cut product and extend shelf life by slowing the product’s respiration rate.

The firm said that the design of the tray lowers stacking height and increases the shipping density and decreases costs for shipping and storage.

The composite surface ends in a quicker seal at lower temperatures in comparison to other trays in the market, reducing the dangers of cross contamination and operator liability.

Paper Pak Industries manufactures absorbent mediums for the food and medical indsutries and offers standard absorbent food pads.

Bunzl Distribution has more than 70 distribution centres through the Northern America continent and the Caribbean area and supplies outsourced packaging and cleaning and safety products to food processors.
