SC imposes Code of Ethics for Media

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has imposed Code of Ethics for print and electronic media through Interim Order immediately. The Court has also directed the federal government to appoint PEMRA Chairman within 30 days. It declared that acting chairman cannot be appointed under the PEMRA Ordinance.

I think this is a step in the right direction to discipline the media. The journalists should abide by the regulations and the code of ethics. It would have been better if media had self regulated its professional activities. Every profession has its own Professional Code of Conduct and Ethics to regulate their profession.

Unbridled freedom of expression and violations cannot be tolerated. Due to the gross abuse of the right to express freely, the Court was forced to take action.

In the recent past the media has committed flagrant violations of ethics. Media must act responsibly, while reporting news and stories. The editorial board should monitor the conduct of its members. It is essential for good Journalism and the need of the hour.
