Mohammad Shami's knee injury could have been career threatening, says surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala

MUMBAI: Mohammad Shami’s performance in Australia will be closely followed by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala here. Following injury to his knee, which kept the 25-year-old fast bowler Shami out of the game for nearly nine months, he underwent a successful surgery at city’s Kokilaben Hospital.

Before leaving for Australia earlier this week, Shami had described the injury as most irritating and hoped he would never get injured again.

“Shami had a severe knee injury. Often such injuries are career threatening for high level athletes. Shami underwent a successful arthroscopic corrective surgery and was diligent in his post-operative rehabilitation. His, and his physios, hard work has paid off and he has made a remarkable recovery”, Dr. Pardiwala, speaking exclusively, said. .

“His positive attitude and “never-say-die” approach have ensured his return to competitive cricket”, the doctor, who is a Head – Centre for Sports Medicine and Director – Arthroscopy Service at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, said.

“The knee problem itself was severe. Although it normally takes 4 months for the surgical repair to heal, it often takes another 4-6 months to be match fit”.

“Shami has recovered completely. His knee is now structurally and functionally normal and he has fulfilled all the challenging NCA fitness criteria for return to cricket. His recent bowling performances while playing for Bengal in Vijay Hazare Trophy and T20 matches have been encouraging. I am confident that he will perform well in Australia”, Dr. Pardiwala added.

Besides Shami there are many other players who too have been treated by this surgeon for their orthopaedic needs.

“I have been taking care of the orthopaedic needs of many of our cricketers since the past 10 years. The international players who have sought treatment are the ones who have injured themselves during the IPL. Patient confidentiality ethics do not allow me to discuss names or the medical-surgical treatment they have undergone”, he further added.

Shami was kind enough to present him the India T-shirt which he wore during one of his memorable World Cup performances.
