The central hub for online promiscuity was recently hacked by a group of hackers called the “Impact Team.” The team of hackers, of course, must have left a significant impact on the company when it gave the threat to expose the identities of their users who includes popular people, politicians, and high-profile public figures.

The Impact Team, wrote, “Too bad for ALM, you promised secrecy but didn’t deliver. We’ve got the complete set of profiles in our DB dumps, and we’ll release them soon if Ashley Madison stays online. And with over 37 million members, mostly from the US and Canada, a significant percentage of the population is about to have a very bad day, including many wealthy and influential people.”

With analysis of the attack still ongoing, The Impact team would have been able to gain access to so much of the company’s data bank through the negligence of some of the company’s employees.

Though such examples are not restricted to online dating websites, technology giants like Sony have been one of the biggest targets in the preceding year. It could be very easy to assume that Sony would have had one of the very best security setups due to the kind of business they do which is all about information. The company was about to release a film titled “The Interview” which was focused on North Korea, was disgraced by hackers. The company has been facing charges of negligence, and interestingly enough, the company was sued by its former employees. They were in the very best position to know what happened. As a result, the critical information was released for the upcoming release, causing millions in damages. Still think technology can protect you from being hacked?

Scammers are also targeting individuals. People from different works of life, nations even some elderly people who mostly were always promised the love they never had in early life have been duped of their life savings. A real life story from where an old retiree, was scammed for $200,000. He started by investing $10,000, and he registered on an investment site where he saw his money increasing beyond the regular money market. Over the period of 12 months, he invested $200,000 in total. He carelessly chose not to tell anyone about it and kept it all to himself. This must be a case of an honest scammer being scammed by a superior one.

The list of online scam seems to be never ending, from technological giants to individuals are being targeted, and the financial damages are in millions. It takes decades to overcome the damage caused by the hacks.

Technology, alone cannot help companies, individuals to stay safe online. The moment you are a global citizen through connection to the internet, you are in one way or the other at risk of this scammers. Almost every large scale attack was caused through spamming or phishing. Companies need to understand that the first point of call in cyber security management is training the workers, who are the major cause of data breaches. The leakages that companies do have and which causes them headaches would have been prevented if they had educated their staffs.
