Teledyne e2v’s Radiation Tolerant Quad ARM® Cortex®-A72 Space Processor Successfully Passes 100krad TID Testing

GRENOBLE, FRANCE – Media OutReach – 16 November 2020 – Teledyne
e2v
has announced that its popular LS1046-Space processor has now passed
stringent total ionizing dose (TID) radiation tests, achieving 100krad
resilience. This multi-core device, which features four
64-bit Arm® Cortex®-A72 processing cores, was able to operate as normal
after the TID tests had been undertaken. These
results complement those previously obtained in terms of single event latch-up
(SEL) and single event upset (SEU) when exposed to heavy-ions up to more than
60MeV.cm²/mg.

Running at operating frequencies
of up to 1.8GHz, Teledyne e2v LS1046-Space is based on
NXP processor technology. It has a built-in 64-bit DDR4 SDRAM memory controller with 8-bit error corrected
code (ECC), plus a 2MByte L2 cache shared
across its cores. L1 and L2 caches are both ECC-protected, so as
to offer a high degree of immunity to data corruption. This high-reliability
processor is supplied in a 780-ball BGA package and comes with a wide range of
interfaces embedded – including 10Gbit Ethernet,
PCI-Express (PCIe) 3.0, SPI, I2C, multiple UARTs, etc.
Conforming with NASA Level 1
requirements, and typically integrated into space-oriented single board computers
(SBCs), it is commonly used in satellite-based imaging related tasks, such as
processing/conditioning and image data compression, as well ultra-low latency
communications and on-board decision making (leveraging AI algorithms).

Thanks to the new test results
obtained, customers will now have the information
needed to know how the processing cores incorporated into LS1046-Space device
will behave within challenging space settings. Engineers will be able to make
better-informed choices about device selection by referring to the detailed test
data now available. The TID figures will give them strong assurances about the longevity
of these units when deployed into space, while the SEL/SEU heavy
ions results provide elevated confidence in ongoing functional integrity.

FRANCE – Media OutReach – 16 November 2020 – Teledyne e2v is moving ever closer to
its goal of bringing about a major overhaul of the signal chain – through the
availability of its latest performance-redefining digital-to-analog converters
(DACs).

The company is now offering beta samples of its EV12DD700
dual-channel device for qualified customers, ahead of volume shipments. This wide
output bandwidth 12-bit (or 8-bit) data converter can deal with sample rates of
up to 12GSamples/s. It has the capacity to generate signal waveforms over
multiple frequency bands.

What sets it apart from other DACs is the fact that it is first on the
market to support operation within the Ka-band (26GHz upwards). Numerous sophisticated features have been incorporated, such as direct digital synthesis (DDS), plus digital up conversion
(DUC) via a built-in 32-bit numerically-controlled oscillator (NCO). These facilitate
greater throughput without putting excess strain on the IC’s resources.

Thanks to the EV12DD700 DACs, Teledyne e2v is enabling
engineers to take significant steps towards creating next generation RF systems
that have much greater versatility. It will mean that RF system
designs with cutting-edge digital functions, like fast frequency hopping (FFH) and
beamforming, can be realized. The software-based approach that is
envisaged will make it possible to implement configuration
changes directly in code, by configuring the DAC, rather than having the
inconvenience and expense of making alterations to the hardware. Key
applications will include radar, satellite communication, terrestrial network
infrastructure, etc. 

This latest announcement follows on the EV12DD700-based evaluation board
that Teledyne e2v introduced back in the spring, via which engineers could
initially gauge the performance levels delivered. Now with direct
access to samples, they will get the opportunity to look at
how the DACs will fit into their designs and begin to plan migration.

“Through these unique DAC devices we are accelerating
the widely anticipated software-ization of RF, which is something that is
certain to bring huge benefits in the future,” explains Nicolas Chantier, Marketing
Director for Data & Signal Processing Solutions at Teledyne e2v. “Availability
of samples at this point will be highly appealing to engineers, as
it will take time to rethink how their data conversion architectures are going
to be structured.”

The new EV12DD700
DACs will be supplied in a Hi-TCE
package format with 20mm x 20mm dimensions. These robust ICs have a wide
operational temperature range, which covers -55°C to 125°C.

Representing a new milestone in the
progression of analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), the 12-bit EV12PS640 complements Teledyne e2v’s recently announced microwave digital-to-analog
converter (DAC) devices, the EV12DD700. This pioneering ADC proof of concept is able to deliver
performance parameters that are beyond the scope of anything currently on the market.
Supporting 11GSamples/s operation, it can
achieve super-high frequency (SHF) direct sampling – reaching all the
way into the Ka frequency band (26GHz and
above). The EV12PS640 will offer a
very wide dynamic range.

Direct
microwave sampling has numerous benefits. Firstly, it eliminates the need for
frequency translation, which means that the risk of signal distortion occurring
is reduced considerably. Next, it offers software-defined versatility across
multiple frequency bands up to Ka. This means that systems are much easier to optimize
for different application scenarios, as well as providing a platform for them
to be reconfigured on the fly. Through a direct
microwave sampling approach, it is possible to
streamline data conversion hardware significantly. Teledyne e2v is introducing, for the first time, 50Ohm single-ended
inputs (for both clock and analog inputs). This thereby suppresses the need for
a balun, resulting in a lower bill-of-materials and associated real estate
savings. It is thus easier to interface with the RF system (which is
classically working under 50Ohms characteristic impedance).

As
a result of all this, direct microwave sampling is starting to prove itself to
be highly advantageous in systems where there are power budget or space
limitations that need to be respected, or where some degree of configurability
is mandated. Now, by taking direct sampling into Ka-band frequencies, Teledyne e2v is set to enable a broad range of high-end RF
applications to be addressed. The EV12PS640
will therefore be of particular relevance
to the future architecture of avionics, military, space, as well as the test
and measurements sectors.

the end of their design projects that engineers will encounter
power and thermal management issues,
but the enclosures that hardware gets housed inside leave little space for
heatsinking or fans, leading to performance trade-offs being made,” Thomas
PORCHEZ, Application Engineer at Teledyne e2v explains. “In addition, engineers
may be forced to leave enough ‘headroom’ to install future system upgrades, and
this will put further pressure on making the system as power efficient as
possible.”

“Space constraints or potential for
mechanical failure could also mean that fan-less systems are mandated. There
might even be a need to provision for maintaining operation in extreme circumstances
– for instance systems being able to keep running for a prolonged period even
if the accompanying fans are no longer working,” he continues. “This is where
our expertise is proving to be vital. Through our combination of screening and
technical advice, we have already successfully halved power consumption levels
in some customer deployments,” he concludes.
