Ukrainian Bomb Blast

Four bombs planted in rubbish bins exploded in Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine, injuring 14 people yesterday on Friday.

The Emergencies Ministry said the first blast happened at a tram stop at 11:50 a.m.(local time), injuring five people followed by another seven people being injured due to a second blast an half an hour later near a cinema.

The third explosion occurred after a short interval next to a park and two people were injured. It isn’t clarified whether the fourth explosion injured anyone which also happened in the downtown area.

President Viktor Yanukovich said the bomb blasts were a ‘challenge’ for the country.

According to the police, the blasts were caused by explosive devices placed in the rubbish bins. The Interior Minister Vitaly Zakharchenko left for the city to lead an investigation.

However, so far, no-one had been detained yet, said a police spokesperson.

So far, the authorities have given no explanation as to what or who was the reason behind the attack.

Bomb attacks have been rare in Ukraine, a former Soviet republic but there is a lot of political tension because of the detention of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko who has been a prisoner for seven years for alleged abuse-of-office which she denies.
