LAHORE: A man killed his wife in Lahore on Tuesday for giving birth to a daughter rather than the son he hoped for, police said.
The victim, Kiran, was allegedly beaten to death by her husband — and his mother in revenge for bearing the couple’s daughter in Lahore, police said.
Police said they arrested the victim’s husband.
Relatives of the deceased blocked the Shalimar Link Road to protest against the accused and demanded police to take action into the murder.
Kiran was brutally assaulted by her in-laws after she gave birth to a baby girl, they alleged. Her family said that police were trying to give it a color of accident to save the suspect.
Protesters accused the police of giving VIP protocol to the accused in lock-up. Later, they dispersed peacefully after police assured that justice would be done.
“The rights of women cannot be relegated to the margins of international affairs, as this issue is at the core of our national security and the security of people everywhere,” the U.S. embassy said in a statement.
