A new university degree specialising in food and drink manufacturing will revolutionise the delivery of engineering into the industry, says a UK trade body.
UK-based Food and Drink Federation (FDF) said it plans to launch the degree in September 2014 as it sought university partners from across the country to develop the cause.
The firm said: “The new degree course will form a fundamental part of the UK food and drink industry’s ‘Graduate Ambition’ to help equip graduates with the technical skills and knowledge that the food and drink manufacturing industry requires”.
According to the association, more than 20 UK universities attended a briefing a fortnight ago at the government’s Department of Business Innovation to discuss the course and ways to develop a future centre of excellence.
Angela Coleshill, the human resources director for FDF, said: “This new degree course will be vital in ensuring we attract the top class young talent qualified to meet the specific needs of our sector”.
Universities have until midday on 8 May to submit their expressions of interest online.
