LAHORE: A man was killed on Wednesday after falling from an electric pole at Ijtema Chowk on Raiwind Road.

According to rescue sources, the victim was removing lights fitted to the pole when he suddenly lost his footing and fell, sustaining fatal injuries.

Rescue officials identified the deceased as 48-year-old Shaukat Ali Faqir. Sources said he was a drug addict.

The rescue team handed the body over to police for the necessary legal formalities. An investigation into the circumstances of the fall is underway.

The death is a reminder of the safety risks around informal work on electrical infrastructure, particularly in the run-up to Independence Day, when decorative lighting is being fitted and removed on poles and public structures across the city — usually without harnesses, insulation or supervision.

City authorities have separately ordered large-scale illumination of public spaces for August 14, work that in practice is often carried out by unregistered casual labour.
