LESCO Shutdown To Hit Services Hospital, Jail Road Feeders On Thursday

More than 40 grid stations across Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib will lose supply for five hours for line maintenance, including industrial feeders on Raiwind Road and at Chung.

LAHORE: Electricity will be cut on Thursday to feeders serving Services Hospital, Jail Road, Lahore College University and Data Darbar, among more than 100 feeders across the Lahore Electric Supply Company’s network, as the utility takes lines down for maintenance and repairs.

The shutdown will run from 9am to 2pm on Oct. 29 on feeders fed from more than 40 grid stations in Lahore and the four surrounding districts LESCO serves, the company said in a notice issued on Wednesday.

Two areas face a different window. Supply from the Narang grid station will be suspended from 10am to 3pm, while Eden City will be off from 9am to 2pm. Feeders on the Askari 10, Ghazi and Defence grid stations will see intermittent cuts over the 9am to 2pm period rather than a continuous shutdown, the notice said.

Hospitals and city centre

In central Lahore, the Shadman grid station’s Jail Road, Lahore College University and Race Course Road feeders are on the list, along with the Services Hospital feeder on the Qurtaba grid. The Fort grid’s Data Darbar and Karim Park feeders will also be shut, as will Dharampura and Mian Mir on the PWR grid and Royal Park off McLeod Road.

A feeder named after a hospital on the Gulshan-e-Ravi grid is also listed, though its name is unclear in the notice. LESCO did not say whether hospitals on affected feeders would be supplied through dedicated or alternate lines, as major hospitals usually are, or whether they would need to run backup generators.

Residential areas including Sabzazar, Syedpur and Amna Park on the Band Road grid, Al-Faisal Town, Nishat Colony and Main Bazaar on the Ghazi grid, Misri Shah, Zaitoon Colony, Hanif Park, Qila Muhammadi, Sanda and Chauhan Road are also scheduled to go dark.

Factories in the frame

The notice reaches deep into Lahore’s industrial belt. On the Chak 65 grid off Raiwind Road, feeders named for Afzal Spinning, Elcot Spinning, Kohinoor Looms and Poly Pak will be shut. The Chung grid’s industrial feeder and Angora Textile and Razzaq International lines are listed, as are Rachna Glass and Siddique Leather on the Green View grid and an Interloop feeder at Jandiala Sher Khan in Sheikhupura.

A five-hour weekday stoppage on dedicated industrial feeders typically forces mills either to halt shifts or to run diesel generation. The timing coincides with a return of heavy smog, with Lahore’s air quality index reaching 312 this week and the provincial government already sealing industrial units in its pollution crackdown.

Outside the city

In Kasur, feeders on the Kasur Old, Kasur New, Pattoki, Bhai Pheru and Kot Radha Kishan grids are affected. Okara district accounts for a long list, led by eight feeders on the Depalpur grid and seven on the Haveli grid, among them Sulemanki and a milk plant. In Sheikhupura, the Sheikhupura, Farooqabad, Sharaqpur, Sukheki and Qila Sattar Shah grids are included, while Sangla Hill, Shahkot and Wan Radha Ram are listed in Nankana Sahib district.

A familiar strain

Scheduled maintenance notices are routine for LESCO, which issues them on most working days. But consumers have had little slack this year. Lahore went through weeks of unannounced load-shedding in late summer, prompting the Punjab Assembly to pass a unanimous resolution against it, and night-time outages returned this month as imported gas supplies tightened.

LESCO’s maintenance arm has also been under scrutiny, with the Power Division ordering an inquiry into alleged misappropriation of material at its grid system construction circle.

The utility urged consumers to conserve electricity. Shutdowns of this kind can be cut short or extended depending on the progress of work and weather conditions, so residents should check with their local LESCO sub-division or the company’s helpline before planning around the timings.
