I would like to draw the attention of your esteemed newspaper to the importance of cultural diplomacy in improving Pakistan’s image and strengthening its relations with other countries. In today’s world, international relations are not limited to political meetings and economic agreements. Culture, education, sports and people-to-people connections also play an important role in bringing nations closer.
Pakistan has a rich cultural heritage that includes different languages, traditions, music, literature, historical places and traditional arts. From the ancient civilisation of Mohenjo-daro to the cultural traditions of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, our country has much to offer the world. However, many people outside Pakistan have limited knowledge of this diversity.
In my opinion, cultural diplomacy can help Pakistan build stronger international relationships. When people learn about another country’s culture, they often develop a better understanding of its society and values. Cultural exchanges can reduce misunderstandings and create opportunities for cooperation. They can also help improve a country’s international reputation.
Pakistan should make greater efforts to promote its culture through international exhibitions, educational exchanges, tourism, sports and cultural festivals. Pakistani universities can develop exchange programmes with foreign institutions, allowing students to learn about different societies and build lasting relationships. Similarly, Pakistani artists, writers, musicians and athletes can represent the country on international platforms.
Tourism is another important area where cultural diplomacy can contribute to economic development. Pakistan has beautiful landscapes, historical sites and diverse cultural traditions. By improving tourism facilities and promoting these attractions internationally, Pakistan can attract more visitors, create employment opportunities and strengthen its cultural connections with other nations.
The government should also use digital platforms to promote Pakistan’s culture and share positive stories about the country. However, cultural diplomacy should not be limited to official campaigns. Ordinary citizens, students and overseas Pakistanis can also play an important role by presenting their culture in a positive and respectful manner.
Cultural diplomacy cannot resolve every political disagreement, but it can create an environment of trust and understanding. Strong relationships between people can support diplomatic efforts and open new opportunities for cooperation.
I hope that Pakistan’s policymakers will give greater attention to cultural diplomacy and recognise its importance in international relations. Promoting our culture is not only a way to protect our identity but also an opportunity to build a stronger and more positive relationship with the world.
