MUMBAI: It wasn’t a memorable Birthday for Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The family of Kumar, who turned 26 on Friday, had heard the “sad” news of his omission for both squads- Asia Cup and World T20- late in the evening.

“We are not worried about his non-selection”, the father, Kiran Pal Singh, speaking exclusively over his mobile, said. “We wish good luck to the player (Mohammad Shami) who got selected in place of my son”.

“Yes, the news of his omission had come on his birthday, but he was not disturbed with it. We believe all 365-days are God given and we don’t consider birthday as a special day”.

“We had arranged a hawan puja in the morning and he participated. There was no special celebration on his birthday. Not because of his omission. He cut cake but we hardly celebrate birthdays in the family”, the father added.

The right-arm medium pacer attended the training session in Meerut with his personal coach, Sanjay Rastogi.

“He came to my academy at 1.00 PM and practiced till 4.00 PM. There was no announcement of the team till then. As usual he had kept his mobile in the car and must have received the news on reaching home”, the coach added.

“Yes, all boys at the academy wished him for his birthday and that was that…”.

“He has been working very hard and never misses coming at the ground. Even when he does not want to practice or is free, he will come at the ground and chat with us”.

“I am sure he would have remained calm on missing the bus on his birthday”, the coach explained.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, however, is in the team to play home series against Sri Lanka. He will leave for Pune tomorrow”, the coach signed off.
