LAHORE / ISLAMABAD: Movement, at last, on Punjab’s long-delayed local government elections. The Election Commission of Pakistan has convened a key meeting to settle the polling date for local body elections in the province.
The ECP has written to the Punjab government inviting it to attend a consultative session on announcing the polling date. In its letter, the Commission asked the province to immediately constitute a provincial cabinet committee so that consultation on the matter can proceed.
According to the letter, the consultation will be conducted under the framework of election law and the Punjab local government law. The meeting is scheduled for 20 August at 11am at the Election Commission’s office in Islamabad.
The ECP has directed that the provincial cabinet committee attend, where a final round of consultation on the polling date for Punjab’s local body elections will take place.
