UMERKOT: Scores of people took part in a rally here to observe World Teachers’ Day.
Members of civil society organisations, district education officials, the teachers’ association, students, educationists and journalists took part in the tribute rally.
The rally was organised by Right To Play and the NCHD in collaboration with the Education and Literacy Department, under the aegis of UNICEF. It set off from Government Higher Secondary School No. 1, passed through the town’s streets, markets and public places, and ended at the Umerkot Press Club.
Speaking at the rally, District Officer Literacy Bilawal Ahmed said teachers were an integral part of society who enriched learners with the fruits of education and enabled them to respond to global challenges.
“A Call for Teachers!” was the slogan of World Teachers’ Day 2013, which focused on the provision of quality education.
Right To Play District Coordinator Abdul Haleem Soomro said teachers were the builders of a healthy society and deserved this tribute beyond this one day. He added that teachers’ skills must be improved in line with modern teaching techniques used worldwide to achieve quality results.
“Teachers are the key to a better future for all, and nothing can replace a good teacher. Every day they help build the inclusive knowledge societies we need for tomorrow and the century ahead,” said Bashir Khoso, a representative of the Government Secondary Teachers Association (GSTA), Umerkot.
NCHD District Programme Manager Abdul Hafeez Kapri said there was a dire need to encourage good teachers who had uplifted their schools by providing quality education, and that the department should hold a recognition award for them every year.
Abdullah Khoso and Ramchand Oad also spoke on the importance of the day.
