LAHORE: The Shad Bagh police have arrested two suspects with prior records during an operation against drug dealers, recovering more than 1,640 grams of charas and 160 grams of ice from their possession.
According to SP City Farhat Abbas, a police team was on patrol when secret information was received, prompting immediate action that resulted in the arrest of both suspects.
Police said the arrested men have been identified as Nabeel Masih and Kabir. Charas was recovered from Nabeel Masih, while ice was recovered from Kabir.
The SP City said the suspects were involved in drug dealing in Essa Nagri and the surrounding areas. Cases have been registered against them and further investigation has begun.
Farhat Abbas said close surveillance and effective action are continuing for the complete elimination of the drug trade, and that action is being taken against elements involved in the narcotics business without discrimination.
Cases of this nature are prosecuted under the Control of Narcotic Substances Act, 1997, which structures sentencing principally around the quantity recovered rather than the identity of the substance alone. The Act sets graduated thresholds, with recoveries above one kilogram attracting substantially heavier punishment than smaller quantities, and further escalation applying at higher weights. The charas recovery in this case falls above the one-kilogram threshold.
Methamphetamine, referred to locally as ice, occupies a different position in the market from cannabis derivatives. It is a synthetic stimulant, considerably more potent by weight, and its spread among younger users in urban Punjab has been a growing concern for law enforcement and health authorities over recent years. Because the quantities involved in retail distribution are far smaller, detection depends more heavily on intelligence than on volume.
The reference to both men as having prior records is procedurally relevant. Punjab Police maintain history sheets and surveillance registers for individuals with repeat involvement in specified categories of offence, and a documented record affects both the investigation and the position taken by the prosecution at the bail stage.
Convictions under the 1997 Act are secured principally on the strength of the recovery, the chain of custody of the sealed sample, and the report of the government analyst confirming the nature of the substance. Defects in sealing, delay in dispatch of samples to the laboratory, or gaps in the custody record are the most common grounds on which such prosecutions fail at trial, which is why procedural compliance at the point of recovery carries disproportionate weight.
Retail-level narcotics distribution in the city typically operates through fixed points in densely populated localities, with dealers known within their immediate neighbourhoods. That visibility makes the trade vulnerable to the kind of local information on which this operation was based, but it also means that individual arrests are readily replaced unless supply channels are addressed.
Both suspects remain in custody as the investigation proceeds.
