LAHORE: Police have arrested the prime suspect and his wife from Sheikhupura just seven hours after the killing of a woman in a family dispute in Sundar.
According to a police spokesperson, the accused, Jahangir, is alleged to have killed Shabana Bibi with an axe during a family dispute, after which the suspects fled the scene.
Shahid Iqbal was also injured during the incident and was shifted to hospital for medical treatment.
Police and forensic teams have collected important evidence from the scene of the crime, while legal proceedings in the case are under way.
According to the spokesperson, police arrested the prime suspect Jahangir and his wife from Kot Abdul Malik, Sheikhupura. Both suspects were taken into custody within just seven hours of the occurrence.
The speed of the arrest is the operationally significant element of the case. In murders arising from domestic or family disputes, the initial hours after the incident are decisive, as suspects known to the complainant party typically move to the residences of relatives in adjoining districts before formal proceedings begin. Kot Abdul Malik lies on the Lahore–Sheikhupura corridor, a short distance from the metropolitan boundary, placing it within the zone that Lahore police routinely cover through coordination with neighbouring district formations.
Sundar falls within the industrial and semi-urban belt on the south-western periphery of Lahore, an area that has expanded rapidly around the Sundar Industrial Estate and now hosts a substantial working population drawn from surrounding districts.
The involvement of forensic teams reflects the standard investigative protocol now applied in Punjab to offences involving loss of life. The Punjab Forensic Science Agency, established in Lahore, provides crime scene response and laboratory analysis across disciplines including serology, DNA profiling, firearms examination, toxicology and trace evidence. Evidence collection at the scene, when properly documented and preserved, is intended to reduce reliance on witness testimony alone at trial — a persistent vulnerability in family homicide prosecutions, where witnesses are frequently related to both the complainant and the accused.
Cases of this nature carry a specific legal complication. Offences against the human body in Pakistan are prosecuted under a framework that permits compromise between the convicted person and the legal heirs of the deceased in certain categories. Where the parties to a case are members of the same extended family, the heirs entitled to compound the offence may include relatives of the accused, which has historically enabled cases to conclude without a determination of guilt on the merits.
Amendments made to the law in 2016 tightened this position in cases falling within the ambit of honour-related killings, restricting the effect of a compromise so that a convicted person may still face a mandatory sentence notwithstanding the heirs’ pardon. The characterisation of a given case therefore has considerable bearing on its eventual trajectory.
Police said the injured man received medical treatment and that further legal formalities in the case are continuing.
Investigation into the circumstances of the family dispute is ongoing.
