Punjab Links Birth And Marriage Certificates To NADRA Biometrics

SHEIKHUPURA: Punjab has begun requiring biometric verification against NADRA’s database before union councils issue birth, death and marriage certificates, a move aimed at ending fake registrations that have long been used in property, inheritance and immigration fraud.

Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique launched the Civil Registration Management System at Company Bagh in Sheikhupura on Friday. Developed by the Local Government Department with NADRA, it will be rolled out to all union councils across Punjab in phases.

Rafique said citizens would be able to obtain authentic certificates without recommendations or bribes. The initiative falls under the government’s “Digital Punjab, Transparent Punjab” programme.

Union council certificates feed directly into NADRA records, including the B-form and CNIC, so a forged entry at the local level can travel through the system. NADRA has separately allowed online registration of births and deaths through its app, and Lahore police busted a fake NADRA website last month.

The minister did not say how long the rollout would take or how many union councils would be covered in the first phase. MPA Pir Ashraf Rasool, Director General Local Government Benish Fatima and Deputy Commissioner Rana Adeel Taswar attended.
