KARACHI: Two Karachi policemen have been suspended and detained after a 17-year-old boy alleged he was tortured in police custody in Surjani Town, in a case a medical examination and a preliminary inquiry have backed.
A preliminary inquiry found the teenager had been held on fake charges and kept in illegal custody, reports said. The constables, Imran and Zain, were suspended. West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said a case would be registered as soon as the family filed a complaint, and Additional IGP Karachi Azad Khan sought a report from the DIG West.
The family says the boy was tortured after failing to pay a bribe. A medico-legal record from Abbasi Shaheed Hospital dated Oct 10 records an alleged assault with a steel object. The boy remains in severe pain, his family says.
Altaf Shakoor, chairman of the Pasban Democratic Party, visited the family and promised legal help and private treatment, and demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Custodial torture is a criminal offence under Pakistan’s Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Act, 2022, which requires cases to be investigated by the Federal Investigation Agency.
