LAHORE: Punjab’s flour supply chain remained fully intact on Sunday, with a total of 760,671 ten-kilogram atta bags delivered to markets across the province, according to an official statement issued by the spokesperson for the Department of Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
The spokesperson said the uninterrupted provision of quality flour to the public is continuing on the special directive of the Chief Minister of Punjab, and that there is no shortage of atta of any kind in the market at present.
Detailing the August 24 figures, the spokesperson stated that flour mills across the province ground a total of 207,060 ten-kilogram bags of government wheat. After milling in both the public and private sectors, hundreds of thousands of flour bags were dispatched to every district.
The private sector alone supplied 325,283 bags of 10 kilograms and 124,164 bags of 20 kilograms to the market. Taken together, the department placed the day’s total supply to Punjab’s markets at 760,671 flour bags of 10-kilogram weight.
The statement said the Food Safety Department and allied agencies are continuously monitoring the quality, pricing and availability of flour at the provincial level — a three-pronged watch that matters because atta remains the single largest staple expense for most household budgets in Punjab, and even a marginal movement in the per-kilogram rate is felt immediately by low-income families.
According to the spokesperson, relevant institutions are fully mobilised against elements involved in hoarding and illegal profiteering, and the pace of legal action has been further accelerated so that citizens can obtain quality flour at officially notified rates.
Enforcement of this kind typically targets the gap between the fixed government price and the rate charged at the retail counter — a gap that widens when stock is deliberately withheld from the market to create artificial scarcity.
All flour mills in the province are functioning as usual and the flour supply chain is completely maintained, the department said. The administration has completed all necessary measures for the abundant and continuous provision of atta so that the public does not face any difficulty or obstruction in obtaining flour.
Daily disclosure of grinding and supply figures has become a routine feature of the provincial administration’s food security messaging, serving both as a market signal to discourage panic buying and as a public accountability record. If mill throughput and district-level dispatch hold at current levels, officials expect retail availability to remain stable in the weeks ahead, with enforcement teams continuing to act against any interruption at the wholesale or retail tier.
